WRITING TIME!

 

Hello everyone!

Today I want to tell you my experience using storyjumper. 

Storyjumper is a 2.0 web in which you can elaborate books. It has been, for me, a great discovery. 

I have used this web with my 3rd grade classroom. As they have a low level of English, I decided to work all together, so the book has been the result of the ideas and creativity of the whole classroom.

I organized four lesson to elaborated the book in the following way: 

1st lesson: I explained the task and shown them the webpage and how it works. Moreover, we selected a theme for the book, the characters and the backgrounds. 

2nd lesson: we did a brainstorming. I wrote on the board the different ideas students told me and after that we choosen the ones we like most democratically. 

3rd lesson: we started to write the story using storyjumper. I wrote the story and put the scenes and characteres (following the ideas we have selected in the previous lessons) while they were watching the process on the digital board. 

4rd lesson: we finished the book, selected the coverpage and wrote the title. 

They enjoyed this activity too much, they were motivated and participated a lot, even they respected speaking turns. 

My learning objectives for this task weren't specific. I believe that it helped them to improve a set of aspects, such as: English grammar and vocabulary, pronounciation, how to organise ideas in a coherent way, express their own ideas without fear, respect others opinions, strengthen their realtions as a group...

In addition, they developed their imagination and creativity during these lessons. I could see, in the firsts lessons, how they didn't want to think or the effort they had to do for express their ideas; and next, they were more receptive and involved, from the half part of the second lesson towards. 

So, I think that this type of task are amazing to improve children creativity as it is, nowadays, a unresolved matter. 

Although the activity was exciting and the result has been better what I expected, there are some thing I will change for the next time. For example, I will try they can manipulate the computer and write some words or choose some characters to put on the book. In addition, I would like to relate the next book with a specific topic we have seen in class, in order they know some vocabulary and they can work in a more indenpent way. 

All in all, I recommend this web to all the teachers. It is a way to do something different in class and a cooperative activity in which students are involved actively and through which they learn a great range of important aspects.
